The San Luis Valley Irrigation District (SLVID) is celebrating "100 years of the Rio Grande Reservoir." The Reservoir is located at the headwaters of the Rio Grande, and has been serving the agricultural community of the San Luis Valley since 1912. The Reservoir provides storage for agricultural needs and is used for compact compliance, fish and wildlife habitat, recreation, and flood control.
As part of the Centennial celebration, the SLVID is holding two contests to develop a logo for the 100th Anniversary event and creating an original work of art to be used in a commemorative poster. The winners of the logo contest and the original artwork contest will receive prizes of $250 and $500 respectively.
The SLVID will use the logo for all promotions, and the deadline for the contest will be January 30, 2012. The artwork contest submission must be an original work of art, and the deadline for submissions is February 24, 2012. Let the 1912-2012 Rio Grande Reservoir 100th Anniversary theme, the Rio Grande Reservoir, our valley's agriculture, and the multiple uses of our water resources be the inspiration for your entry. Final selections in each of the two categories will be made in conjunction with the valley-wide Colorado Water 2012 celebrations.
Colorado Water 2012 is a statewide initiative set-up to recognize milestones in Colorado's water communities. Some highlights of Water 2012 in the Rio Grande Basin will include: a historical celebration and tour of the Rio Grande Reservoir; weekly water stories in local newspapers showcasing the past, present, and future of water; radio interviews introducing listeners to a wide variety of water experts and storytellers; a hands-on booth at waterfest;
